A long time ago in a distant fairy tale countryside, a young girl leads her little brother into a dark wood in desperate search of food and work, only to stumble upon a nexus of terrifying evil.
.
Movie Type (Genre) Heading
Fantasy Horror Thriller - While a retelling of the familiar Hansel and Gretel fairy tale and thus featuring two young actors as the title characters, this is a dark and slow horror thriller aimed squarely at adults. There is little in graphic gore but there are some scary scenes, imagery, situations, cannibalism references, and general atmosphere that are much too intense for kids.

Slant Magazine Full Review
Good Perkins's patient, deliberate pacing, along with Galo Olivares's gorgeously moody cinematography, creates a densely layered, richly atmospheric sense of place within which Gretel's coming of age plays out. The forest is transformed into a landscape of impending doom...
