A charismatic New York City jeweler always on the lookout for the next big score, makes a series of high-stakes bets that could lead to the windfall of a lifetime. Howard must perform a precarious high-wire act, balancing business, family, and encroaching adversaries on all sides, in his relentless pursuit of the ultimate win.
Comedy Crime Drama - This big starring vehicle for Adam Sandler is a major change of pace showcase for the comic star, this being a very dark and gritty drama. Other familiar faces here, such as LaKeith Stanfield, Idina Menzel, and retired basketball star Kevin Garnett, all have smaller, secondary roles. Constant language, drug use, some sexual content, and bloody violence make the film not for kids.
PROFANITY: Well over 30 F-words; over 30 S-words; 19 GD's; many others. SEX/NUDITY: Brief masturbation and unrelated nudity. VIOLENCE: Hits and shootings with blood. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Alcohol, tobacco, cocaine. ACTION: A foot chase. COMEDY: Darkly comic lines and situations.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Very Good Uncut Gems may not appeal to those who don't appreciate the slow-burn approach. Terms like "gritty" and "exhausting" apply. Although aspects of the storyline may seem familiar, the overall trajectory retains the capacity to surprise and shock with its bluntness.
Roger EbertFull Review Excellent Delusion feeds addiction, and addiction needs a constant supply of delusion. "Uncut Gems" shows this electrified-fence feedback loop like no other film in recent memory. It's excruciating and exhilarating.
Rolling StoneFull Review Excellent ...plays like a white-knuckle thriller. Uncut Gems does not let up. Every second in this movie pops, starting with opening on a black opal being mined in Ethiopia (social criticism intended) and working its way to Howard's store.
Rex ReedFull Review Very Good The Safdies' film is a cinematically expressive tightrope walk that seems designed to leave your blood pressure permanently spiked. It can be relentless and hard to take, but it is brimming with surprise and a vivacity that radiates off the screen.

OPINION OVERVIEW The following is the original "What's Worth
Watching" write-up for this movie.
Based on a theater exit polling of 19 moviegoers:
WHOA! The professional movie critics all raved about this movie and gave it great reviews. It's clear that the average moviegoer doesn't share in their enthusiasm. Unfortunately, we weren't able to collect very many reviews from a couple of showings, (hardly anyone went to see this movie), but what we were able to collect clearly shows that moviegoers, for the most part, did not like "Uncut Gems." It's rare to see any reviews of "terrible," but there are several for this movie.
