Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Good There's a comedic undercurrent in the film... By keeping the tone from becoming too somber and generating a degree of sympathy for Jewell, Eastwood has crafted an engaging (albeit fictionalized) account of the triumph of ordinary men over the establishment.
Roger EbertFull Review Very Good Eastwood's conceptions of heroism and villainy have always been, if not endlessly complex, at least never simplistic. One thing he's not is a moral relativist; he clearly believes in good and evil, and in good actors and bad actors.
NY PostFull Review Above Average ...it's a tightly paced feature, with strong performances all around. It's also one of the season's most politically polarized films. The director gives an effectively claustrophobic portrayal of the way Jewell's life, and his mother's, were torn apart by his being wrongfully profiled as a terrorist.
Slant MagazineFull Review Above Average As stacked and calculating as Richard Jewell is, it's a fascinating expression of the divided soul of a gifted and troubling artist. It's a rattling expression of American bitterness.
