A house is cursed by a vengeful ghost that dooms those who enter it with a violent death.
Horror Mystery - This is not a start-over reboot of the supernatural horror series from 2004 and 2006, but a spin-off sequel that takes place concurrently with the events of the first film. The cast features an ensemble of familiar character actors, from Andrea Riseborough and Damian Bichir to John Cho and horror mainstay Lin Shaye. Unlike the previous two films, this film is rated R due to much more graphic and bloody violence, and that along with language and generally disturbing themes make the film not for kids.

Roger EbertFull Review Good ...Pesce orchestrates a dense, foreboding atmosphere, where unlucky souls have to manage their own oppressive sadness, along with the shadowy, space-invading entities that pop up in the dark.
NY PostFull Review Below Average How did this many talented actors get involved in this mess?
Rolling StoneFull Review Above Average But things keep devolving into a sort of "stock beats" catalog of J-scares that goes from deja vu to dullness to deadening as The Grudge's running time marches on.
Slant MagazineFull Review Poor Even worse than some sloppy, amateurish creation, this is a minimally competent personality vacuum...

OPINION OVERVIEW The following is the original "What's Worth
Watching" write-up for this movie.
Based on a theater exit polling of 25 moviegoers:
As with most horror movies, the critic reviews vary greatly (good to poor) and it appears the moviegoer reviews are also quite varied.
TEENS: Three of the four males and females loved "The Grudge," which is good since this type of movie is generally targeted at this age group. Apparently one couple were disappointed.
TWENTYSOMETHINGS: Two males loved it, one felt is was a "good/average" movie and one was disappointed. The females reviews are almost identical.
ADULTS: Of the five males, two loved it, but the other three only rated it "good/average" (enjoyable but nothing special or memorable). The female reviews are not good. Just one of the three really enjoyed "The Grudge." The other two really disliked it.
