Jo March, reflects back and forth on her fictional life. In Gerwig's take, the beloved story of the March sisters-four young women each determined to live life on her own terms-is both timeless and timely.
Drama Romantic - This drama is another adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's ever-popular novel of the same name though it takes some different and modern approaches to the material. Fans of Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet should definitely enjoy though other familiar stars such as Meryl Streep, Laura Dern, and Emma Watson have smaller supporting roles. There is some period authentic alcohol and tobacco use, but most parents will find this safe viewing, especially for the target of girls.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Good Because of the strength of the acting (Ronan's in particular) and Gerwig's unusual (love it or hate it) reworking of the novel's chronology and ending, it deserves to be seen. Time will tell whether it becomes as beloved for today's generation as the 1994 version was for those born in the 1970s and 1980s.
Roger EbertFull Review Excellent A cozy, polished and masterly cinematic rendering of Louisa May Alcott's immortal 19th-century novel, "Little Women" solidifies Gerwig's one-of-a-kind voice on the page and behind the camera, opening up the classic in a blissful and innovative screen adaptation that feels ageless and vastly of today.
NY PostFull Review Excellent The most impressive thing about this "Little Women" is Gerwig's balancing act: Here is a much more incisive look at the relationship between women and art than previous versions -- but also tons of holiday magic. It's a warm fireplace hearth of a film, albeit one with a tendency to spit out fiery embers.
Rolling StoneFull Review Excellent ...both surprisingly timely and enduringly timeless. The actors could not be better... All praise to Gerwig for bringing out the roiling passions in a book that has often been mined for sentiment, and for honoring the author without clipping the wings of her own wit and soaring imagination.
