The extraordinary tale of Harriet Tubman's escape from slavery and transformation into one of America's greatest heroes, whose courage, ingenuity, and tenacity freed hundreds of slaves and changed the course of history.
Drama - This drama about the life of freedom fighter Harriet Tubman is less a stodgy historical piece and more of an action thriller. Cynthia Erivo is the title character, with some more familiar faces showing up only in smaller roles. There is some language and violence, but parents of pre-teens and up may excuse that due to the important subject matter.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Good ...inspirational and crowd-pleasing. ... the overall feel is that of a conventional biopic. Perhaps constrained by mainstream expectations, Lemmons never strives for something epic, instead relying on the episodic approach embraced by many true-life stories. By blending facts, myths, and made-up material, Lemmons weaves a strong, engaging tale...
Roger EbertFull Review Good Erivo captures Tubman's shining spirit and courage with compassion, beautifully reflecting her bravery on a toughened face she wears with pride. It's thanks to her reflective commitment that the occasional wooden dialogue of "Harriet” flows with grace and the sporadic visual misfortunes don't linger in one's mind for too long.
NY PostFull Review Above Average Though deeply well-intentioned, director Kasi Lemmons' film never really breaks free of conventional biopic mode. Her final confrontation with a repellent slave owner (Joe Alwyn), while over-the-top, gives the kind of catharsis you expect from a Hollywoodized version of Tubman's story.
Rolling StoneFull Review Very Good Cynthia Erivo captures the spirit of Underground Railroad freedom fighter Harriet Tubman with enough ferocity and feeling to set this biopic soaring. The passionate acting of this British dynamo — a Tony winner for The Color Purple on Broadway — comes in handy when the film itself threatens to trip on its own hard-sold uplift.
