An embattled NYPD detective is thrust into a citywide manhunt for a pair of cop killers after uncovering a massive and unexpected conspiracy. As the night unfolds, lines become blurred on who he is pursuing, and who is in pursuit of him. When the search intensifies, extreme measures are taken to prevent the killers from escaping Manhattan as the authorities close all 21 BRIDGES to prevent any entry or exit from the iconic island.
Crime Drama Thriller - While there are some action sequences, this is not an action film but a more serious and gritty crime drama. Fans of stars Chadwick Boseman and Stephan James will enjoy, but some other familiar faces such as J.K. Simmons have much more limited screen time. Constant language and brutal violence make the film not for kids.
Roger EbertFull Review Good ...one of the most entertaining and thoughtful American policiers in recent memory... ...the movie is also about standoff, shoot-outs, foot chases, car chases, and more. Which Kirk delivers in tight, economic style.
NY PostFull Review Poor ...one of the worst depictions of our city ever filmed. ...what's so enraging about "21 Bridges” is that this substandard thriller seizes on a polarizing group — the police — in an obvious ploy to make a relevant political point about cop culture.
Slant MagazineFull Review Poor 21 Bridges never really pauses to consider how Davis let a childhood trauma justify a lifetime of dubious behavior under the legal protection of a badge. In the end, 21 Bridges suggests that the only true problem with the increasing power of a police state is that some cops might be unworthy of the authority otherwise duly invested in them.
The GuardianFull Review Above Average ...perfectly serviceable New York crime thriller... ...some coolly choreographed chase sequences and shootouts... ...the action barrels along really nicely... ...the quasi-real-time pursuit is followed with great gusto. Boseman carries off the drama with flair and style.
