A group of young teens must solve the mystery surrounding sudden and macabre deaths in their small town.
Horror - While rated PG-13, this horror film is much
too intense for kids, despite being based on
best-selling books that are aimed at the pre-
teen set and above. There is no overly
graphic gore but the darkness and intensity
will be disturbing. Newcomers play the young
lead characters, with some familiar character
actors turning up in supporting roles.
Roger EbertFull Review Good "Scary Stories” is a strangely uplifting throwback to old-fashioned clans of investigative teens. While it doesn't break any new ground, there is plenty of vintage fun to be had with kids who feel their way through life's impending fears and live to tell the tale.
Rolling StoneFull Review Above Average It's all a lot of chain-rattling, black-cat-screeching fun, though not such a blast that you don't notice how generic and ramshackle the whole endeavor feels, or that an ending that can best be summed up as "Who lives, who dies, who tells your story?” doesn't necessarily tie everything together the way the creators would like it to.
Rex ReedFull Review Above Average ...stripped of the full gory toolbox normally gifted horror directors, Øvredal ends up relying too much on ear-piercing jump scares. There is never that kind of palpable and encroaching sense of dread in Scary Stories that even the lesser Conjuring films just ooze.
Slant MagazineFull Review Above Average The filmmakers, at first, take their time getting to the spooky stuff, reveling in midcentury American suburbia in autumn and the circumstances of its characters. But too often the supernatural slayings feel disconnected from the preceding character development.
