College-bound romantic Daniel Bae and Jamaica-born pragmatist Natasha Kingsley meet-and fall for each other-over one magical day amidst the fervor and flurry of New York City.
Drama Romantic - This is a romantic drama aimed at teens and young adults,
particularly females. Fans of stars Yara Shahidi and Charles
Melton's television series work will certainly enjoy since this film
almost solely focuses on the pair, with supporting players such as
John Leguizamo having very small roles. Adult subject matter will
make the film of some concern to parents of the youngest of kids, but
most parents will find this safe for pre-teens and up.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Above Average It's not horrible and it may please its target audience but it misses an opportunity to have a deeper and less surgically-targeted impact than what it achieves. The movie shouldn't just work for those who have read Yoon's novel and/or girls age 12-17.
Roger EbertFull Review Above Average ...is the impossibly contrived stuff of Young Adult fantasies. And yet the leads are so lovely and the city is so shimmery that it's hard not to get caught up in its spell—for a while, at least, until its corny coda destroys whatever goodwill the film has generated.
NY PostFull Review Average ...a sweet but soupy adaptation of a young adult novel. ...the movie should pack a punch. But while it keeps its eye on the stars, its feet never leave the ground.
Rex ReedFull Review Below Average With a noticeable absence of dynamism in its storytelling and no combustible erotic charge between its lead actors, The Sun is Also a Star is less of a movie than it is an extended version of one of those Instagram stories....

OPINION OVERVIEW The following is the original "What's Worth
Watching" write-up for this movie.
Based on a theater exit polling of 21 moviegoers:
Like the critic reviews, these moviegoer reviews vary quite a bit.
TEENS: The lone male didn't enjoy this movie much. Neither did three of the five females. Since this movie is targeted at teens, these are certainly disappointing reviews.
TWENTYSOMETHINGS: The lone female loved "The Sun is Also a Star."
ADULTS: One male rated it "above average," which indicates he enjoyed it very much. The other one rated it "good/average." (enjoyable but nothing special or memorable). Of the 12 females, three loved it, three enjoyed it very much, but the remaining six felt it was just a "good/average" movie.
