Storyline Heading
TOLKIEN explores the formative years of the renowned author's life as he finds friendship, courage and inspiration among a fellow group of writers and artists at school. Their brotherhood strengthens as they grow up and weather love and loss together, including Tolkien’s tumultuous courtship of his beloved Edith Bratt, until the outbreak of the First World War which threatens to tear their fellowship apart. All of these experiences would later inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-earth novels.

Critic's Review Heading

Roger Ebert Full Review
Above Average Flip-flopping back and forth between Tolkien's orphaned childhood/schooling years and a prolonged imagining of his experience during the Battle of the Somme in 1916, "Tolkien" approaches its subject with maybe a little bit too much reverence...

NY Post Full Review
Average Would it have been tacky to visually play up the connection between Tolkien's harrowing experiences on the World War I battlefield and his depiction of Mordor in the books? Perhaps. Beyond the briefest of allusions, Karukoski tastefully leaves that to the imagination. But this — like much of the film — is a tastefulness that induces sleepiness.

Rex Reed Full Review
Average Tolkien is another ho-hum literary biopic... You watch along as it unravels with the tempo of a funeral dirge, and before you check your watch, you realize you're already bored to death. Maybe Tolkien had a fascinating life story full of anecdotes that inspired his future work, but it isn't told here.

Slant Magazine Full Review
Below Average ...uninspired yarn about a visionary author, resting its laurels on the unquestionable talents of its subject while treating the artistic process in the most frustratingly reductive of ways.
