Kim Nguyen exposes the ruthless edge of our increasingly digital world. Cousins from New York, Vincent and Anton are players in the high-stakes game of High-Frequency Trading, where winning is measured in milliseconds. Their dream? To build a straight fiber-optic cable line between Kansas and New Jersey, making them millions. But nothing is straightforward for this flawed pair. Anton is the brains, Vincent is the hustler, and together they push each other and everyone around them to the breaking point with their quixotic adventure. Constantly breathing down their necks is their old boss Eva Torres, a powerful, intoxicating and manipulative trader who will stop at nothing to come between them and beat them at their own game.
Roger EbertFull Review Average ...works overtime, shifting gears repeatedly without once providing enough substance for the viewer to engage. It keeps trying on new genre outfits like an undecided shopper—here's a comedic element, now here's some thriller crumbs, and oh yes, a tragic illness for good measure!
NY PostFull Review Average ...ultimately, there's no one here to really care about. The most interesting aspect of "The Hummingbird Project” is when it gets out of the boardroom and into the elements... ...its banter keeps the scenes moving along briskly...
Rolling StoneFull Review Average ...the convoluted script...keeps tripping over itself in a strenuous effort to drum up interest into a premise that is decidedly uncinematic. Nguyen (director) can stir up all the sturm and drang he wants, but Hummingbird feels as humdrum and impersonal as a blueprint.
Slant MagazineFull Review Below Average ...the deal-making and bureaucracy involved in drilling a very long, very thin tunnel across several states isn't intrinsically compelling. Such an endeavor has neither the luster of an underhanded enrichment scheme nor the social relevance of a life-changing innovation...
