Rachael Morgan arrives in the ruins of Hamburg during the bitter winter, to be reunited with her husband Lewis, a British colonel charged with rebuilding the shattered city. But as they set off for their new home, Rachael is stunned to discover that Lewis has made an unexpected decision: They will be sharing the grand house with its previous owners, a German widower and his troubled daughter. In this charged atmosphere, enmity and grief give way to passion and betrayal.
Roger EbertFull Review Average ...a listlessly soapy melodrama...could have been churned out 60-70 years ago and then gone largely forgotten in the ensuing decades. ...a handsomely mounted work and those who don't have a problem with watching second-rate melodramatics might find it to be a vaguely tolerable way of killing a couple of hours.
NY PostFull Review Poor The drama is a crude blend of history and pulpy romance, with maudlin performances from the two leads.
Rolling StoneFull Review Below Average ..a stuffy, soggy slog of a movie that fails to generate sparks or a lick of dramatic sense. ...is soap opera, leaving suds that even the stellar Knightley, Skarsgård and Clarke can't rinse off their performances.
Slant MagazineFull Review Below Average The film rapidly and clumsily devolves into a hermetically sealed melodrama... In the end, the film's threads of personal loss and cultural friction are all but lost amid the simultaneously undercooked and overwrought motions of the characters' romantic entanglements.
