A sweet, naive young woman trying to make it on her own in New York City, Frances doesn't think twice about returning the handbag she finds on the subway to its rightful owner. That owner is Greta, an eccentric French piano teacher with a love for classical music and an aching loneliness. Having recently lost her mother, Frances quickly grows closer to widowed Greta. The two become fast friends - but Greta's maternal charms begin to dissolve and grow increasingly disturbing as Frances discovers that nothing in Greta's life is what it seems.
Drama Horror - This is a thriller aimed at an adult audience,
particularly women. Fans of leads Isabelle
Huppert and Chloe Grace Moretz will definitely
enjoy. The other familiar face in the cast,
Stephen Rea, only has a very small role.
Language and violence make the film not for
PROFANITY: 2 S-words; 4 GD's; a few others. SEX/NUDITY: None. VIOLENCE: Fighting, shootings with blood. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Frequent alcohol; people are drugged. ACTION: None. COMEDY: Darkly comic lines and situations.
Roger EbertFull Review Above Average This is a ridiculous film, knowingly so. It's hard to say who winks at the audience more often, Jordan or Huppert. As in other movies in this vein, Greta absorbs physical punishment that would incapacitate a team of Clydesdales and keeps right on coming—but it's a lot of fun...
NY PostFull Review Poor ...rotten acting, dialogue and score. Filled with "Jaws”-y surprise moments, it's less likely to elicit shivers than giggles. So does much of the dialogue.
Rolling StoneFull Review Very Good ... is in it for suspense tinged with laughs. But with these two dynamo actresses front and center, this nail-biter keeps you riveted.
Rex ReedFull Review Good It's a nail-biter that sends ice down the spine and proves that in the hands of a master director, any genre is capable of achieving new heights of imagination.
