Gloria finds a power she never knew she had when she is drawn into a dangerous world of cross-border crime. Surviving will require all of her cunning, inventiveness, and strength. Based on the Spanish-language film.
Action Drama Thriller - While being sold as an action thriller, this remake of the Mexican
film of the same name is more of a slower moving crime drama. Gina
Rodriguez fans will enjoy this big screen showcase for the TV star,
but Anthony Mackie's role is a brief cameo. While rated PG-13, some
violence, drug use, and adult subject matter make the film not for kids.
Roger EbertFull Review Average Although the plot to enter the main character into the beauty pageant loses much of its poignancy in the 2019 movie, the remake holds onto the visual motif for a dramatic final showdown in which Rodriguez, in a ballgown, reclaims her independence with bullets.
USA TodayFull Review Average As far as storytelling goes, "Miss Bala” is a pretty tightly packed affair that zooms along at a nice clip. On the other hand, rampant bribery as a way to move through pesky plot obstacles does seem a bit of a cheat. What keeps it all watchable is Rodriguez's magnetism.
NY PostFull Review Above Average Delivering a nuanced performance, Rodriguez (CW's "Jane the Virgin”) is riveting to watch, even when her first headlining feature film fails her. Overall, "Miss Bala” is a misfire — but its leading lady is No. 1 with a bullet. And that's a beautiful sight to see. Now, can this queen get a movie worthy of her talent?
Slant MagazineFull Review Very Poor ...this nihilistic vision of Mexico is less off-putting than the actual meat of the film, which constantly circles back to Lino, an intimidating figure who uses casual threats of violence and sexual assault to keep Gloria in line, in order to prop him up as a sympathetic figure...
