A daughter and wife-to-be, Tish vividly recalls the passion, respect and trust that have connected her and her artist fiance Alonzo Hunt, who goes by the nickname Fonny. Friends since childhood, the devoted couple dream of a future together but their plans are derailed when Fonny is arrested for a crime he did not commit.
Crime Drama Romantic - Despite the young adults at the center of this adaptation of the
James Baldwin's novel of the same name, this is a slow-moving drama
aimed at older adults. The most familiar of faces in the cast, such
as Regina King, are in supporting roles, or in some cases just
cameos, as is the case with Dave Franco and Diego Luna. Language,
sexual content, and adult subject matter make the film not for kids.
PROFANITY: 9 F-words; 21 S-words; a few others. SEX/NUDITY: Sex with related nudity. VIOLENCE: Some hits and grabs. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Alcohol and tobacco. ACTION: None. COMEDY: Some comic lines and situations.
Roger EbertFull Review Excellent This isn't a happy film but it isn't a hopeless one, either. The most striking thing that you'll take with you is that Baldwin's novel was written 44 years ago, but it's just as timely now. Not much has changed for people of color, which probably wouldn't surprise the author.
NY PostFull Review Above Average "Beale Street” is one of the most lavishly shot films of the year... Deeply felt, with a nonstop, wiry frisson of frustration and rage, it's worth taking the time to savor. "Unbow your head, sister,” Ernestine tells Tish. It's a powerful message.
Slant MagazineFull Review Excellent Beyond talent lie all the usual words: discipline, love, luck, but most of all, endurance.” You can sense such endurance in every frame of If Beale Street Could Talk, Barry Jenkins's superb adaptation of Baldwin's 1974 novel of the same name...
