Action Thriller - This largely submarine-set action thriller is
a starring vehicle for Gerard Butler, with
other familiar co-stars such as Gary Oldman,
Common, and Linda Cardellini distinctly
secondary roles. Language and violence make
the film not for kids.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Good There's also a big crowd-pleasing moment that drew cheers from the audience when I saw the film. Hunter Killer is that kind of movie – it's easy to point out all the things it does wrong and poke fun at its mistakes but, in the end, it's an absorbing way to pass two hours.
Roger EbertFull Review Average Butler's performance—or lack thereof—keeps "Hunter Killer” from breaking any ground in the field of war movies. It's also an odd time to release a movie that embraces collaborating with the Russians... Neither the movie or Butler is nearly entertaining enough to distract us.
Slant MagazineFull Review Below Average ...all the hollow, one-note characters and laughably simplistic, unrecognizable geopolitics on display throughout Hunter Killer betray its roots as a second-rate airport thriller that makes The Hunt for Red October seem like nonfiction by comparison.
