Critic's Review Heading

Roger Ebert Full Review
Very Good "Can You Ever Forgive Me?” comes from a place of understanding and love that few other biopics do, and it makes this difficult character a joy to meet. ...at once a low-stakes crime drama, a buddy comedy, a period piece and a loving tribute to a woman who at this point in her life and career did not feel loved.

USA Today Full Review
Very Good Melissa McCarthy does way more than just make us laugh in the darkly comedic biopic "Can You Ever Forgive Me?": She gives a supremely soulful and career-best performance as an unlikely literary criminal.

NY Post Full Review
Very Good With her best work since 2011's "Bridesmaids,” McCarthy is brilliant. ...has a lot of laughs and a delicious setup, but it hits hardest as a drama about human desperation and survival. McCarthy and her innate warmth is key to making a grouchy, unpleasant con artist with bad hygiene likable — lovable, even. She's hilarious as ever, but she uses jokes here as a social shield, rather than to steal the spotlight.

Rex Reed Full Review
Excellent You can safely call Can You Ever Forgive Me? the kind of rare, real-deal masterpiece that comes along once in a blue moon—and mean it. It is impossible to either under-or-over-estimate the ability with which Melissa McCarthy establishes squatters' rights on this film. She completely disappears into the character and personality of Lee Israel...
