10-year-old Lewis goes to live with his uncle in a creaky old house with a mysterious tick-tocking heart. But his new town's sleepy facade jolts to life with a secret world of warlocks and witches when Lewis accidentally awakens the dead.
Fantasy Mystery Sci-Fi - Like most of director Eli Roth's work, this is technically a horror
thriller, but it's one aimed at families and pre-teens, not unlike a
Gremlins or the Goosebumps television series. That
said, there are a number of images and scenes that would be too scary
and intense for young kids. Fans of Jack Black and Cate Blanchett
will certainly enjoy though Kyle MacLachlan fans may be disappointed
by his limited screen time.

Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Above Average Although the movie isn't bad enough to qualify as a slog for older viewers, the boilerplate story makes it tough to stay engaged. Unlike the Harry Potter movies, The House with a Clock in Its Walls fails to find the sweet spot for cross-generational appeal.
Roger EbertFull Review Above Average ...basically watchable. Granted, it is more than a little familiar... ...the menagerie of computer-generated monsters, which includes talking dummies and sentient jack-o'-lanterns, are slick-looking. So if you're not paying too much attention...you might be able to overlook the programmatic nature of "The House with a Clock In Its Walls."
Rolling StoneFull Review Above Average ...this bustling magic show promises a thrill ride of scares and giggles. The something extra comes with watching Black and Blanchett match wits, especially the former; he radiates his signature comic moxie with glimmers of the dramatic chops he demonstrated in movies like...
Slant MagazineFull Review Poor The rush of the plot's setup extends to the dialogue, which never settles into a steady, believable cadence. The final act...stumbles between awkward, telegraphed jolts and busy, effects-heavy action, completely losing sight of the trauma and grief that was meant to give the film its emotional core.
