The story follows New Yorker Rachel Chu as she accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick Young, to his best friend's wedding in Singapore. Excited about visiting Asia for the first time but nervous about meeting Nick's family, Rachel is unprepared to learn that Nick has neglected to mention a few key details about his life. Not only is he the scion of one of the country's wealthiest families, but also one of its most sought-after bachelors. Being on Nick's arm puts a target on Rachel's back, with jealous socialites and, worse, Nick's own disapproving mother taking aim.
Comedy - This is a romantic comedy that is targeted at female audiences though
men should enjoy as well. Constance Wu and Michelle Yeoh have
prominent roles, but the other familiar faces in the cast, Awkwafina
and especially Ken Jeong, have much smaller roles. There is some
language and suggestive humor, but most families will be fine with
this being viewed by pre-teens and up.
PROFANITY: 1 F-word; 3 S-words; 2 GD's; a few others. SEX/NUDITY: Brief clothed sexy dancing and groping. VIOLENCE: A crotch hit played for laughs. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Frequent alcohol. ACTION: None. COMEDY: Banter, wisecracks, sight and physical gags.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Above Average I realize that the majority of those who see the movie are simply interested in escapism and wish-fulfillment. For those viewers, although the fantasy may not be the most original or best executed, it works well enough to satisfy the craving.
Roger EbertFull Review Very Good Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable, even if most of us are not married to or dating secret millionaires. And though the film may feel overstuffed, it all works in service of its story.
NY PostFull Review Very Good This heartwarming, well-acted — and decadent — film takes you back to the greatest hits of Nancy Meyers, Richard Curtis and Nora Ephron. Still, "Crazy Rich Asians” is a preposterously fun movie that delivers exactly what its title promises.
OPINION OVERVIEW The following is the original "What's Worth
Watching" write-up for this movie.
Based on a theater exit polling of 104 moviegoers:
OUTSTANDING REVIEWS! The vast majority of all ages, both males and females, LOVED "CRAZY RICH ASIANS." Still, about 20% of the adult males and 15% of the adult females rated it just "good/average" (enjoyable but nothing special or memorable).
