While on his first hunt with his tribe's most elite group, a young man is injured and must learn to survive alone in the wilderness. Reluctantly taming a lone wolf abandoned by its pack, the pair learn to rely on each other and become unlikely allies, enduring countless dangers and overwhelming odds in order to find their way home before winter arrives.
Action Adventure Drama - Hidden from the marketing for this period adventure story is the fact
that, while dialogue is fairly minimal, none of it is English and is
subtitled. While there is no harsh language and the bloodshed shown
is moderate at worst, there are some brutal and potentially
disturbing moments of violence, often involving animals, that would
be intense for young children. That said, families with pre-teens
and up will find this tale of a boy and a wolf to be generally safe
Roger EbertFull Review Good There's a pleasant, old-fashioned feel to "Alpha.” It plays like one of those Disney nature movies with sharper edges, a bit more grime and a complete lack of the English language. The best feature of "Alpha” is its imagery... It's a charming story, to be sure. Unless you're a wolf.
Rolling StoneFull Review Very Good Alpha is not a perfect movie, and it is occasionally a way-too-pumped-up pulpy one relying on big-budget bulk. But it is most certainly a tonic in an age when every blockbuster film feels like part of some endless multiverse-cum-marketing scheme.
Rex ReedFull Review Above Average ...it is difficult not to be impressed by much of what does arrive on screen. In telling a simple tale of survival and friendship on the grandest scale, Alpha stands out as one of the more creative uses of big screen spectacle this summer.
Slant MagazineFull Review Below Average These endless shots take up a significant portion of Alpha's running time, and they trap the film between a straightforward narrative feature and the bland, screen-saver nature porn of museum-bound IMAX documentaries.
