A U.S. Special Forces team, led by their new Captain, Mitch Nelson, is chosen to be the first U.S. troops sent into Afghanistan for an extremely dangerous mission. There, in the rugged mountains, they must convince Northern Alliance General Dostum to join forces with them to fight their common adversary: the Taliban and their Al Qaeda allies. In addition to overcoming mutual distrust and a vast cultural divide, the Americans-accustomed to state-of-the-art warfare-must adopt the rudimentary tactics of the Afghan horse soldiers. But despite their uneasy bond, the new allies face overwhelming odds: outnumbered and outgunned by a ruthless enemy that does not take prisoners.
Action Drama - This is a fact-based war drama. While generally an ensemble piece,
Chris Hemsworth and Navid Negahban have the most prominent roles,
with familiar faces such as Michael Pena and Michael Shannon have far
more limited roles. Constant language and intense war violence make
the film not for kids.
PROFANITY: Over 30 F-words; 26 S-words; 15 GD's; a number of others. SEX/NUDITY: None. VIOLENCE: Shootings with blood. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Alcohol and frequent tobacco. ACTION: War combat, chases, explosions. COMEDY: Some comic lines and kid humor.
Roger EbertFull Review Above Average ...this is a rousing war picture, meant to stir equal amounts of excitement and patriotism. ...you'll walk out of the theater with the feeling that you, too, have gone to war – and an appreciation for those who are brave enough to do so themselves. Where the film could have used more power is in its narrative momentum.
USA TodayFull Review Above Average ..Hemsworth's charisma and physical presence really pop here; in the insane situation of soldiers on horses facing off with an armored division, he at least looks strong enough to survive the experience. The hilly terrain offers spectacular views and an intriguing battlefield for the cast.
Rolling StoneFull Review Above Average This is not a movie with time on its hands for character development or scrappy discussions of the politics involved on both sides. What 12 Strong does deliver, however, is a rousing tribute to the bravery of soldiers whose contributions went unheralded for years. That impact cannot be denied.
Slant MagazineFull Review Poor 2 Strong inevitably proceeds as a jaunty imperial adventure through the wilds of northern Afghanistan. It's worth noting that in a film chock-full of death, the murder of this one girl is the only truly memorable moment of violence.
