Movie Type (Genre) Heading
Action Thriller - This is not a typical Jackie Chan action vehicle, for the tone is very serious, and there is no lightness and comedy in his performance or the film in general. As such, the film skews to an older audience than most of his work. Pierce Brosnan has a substantial co-starring role. Language and violence make the film not for kids.

Critic's Review Heading

Berardinelli, Internet Critic Full Review
Good ...it's well-made, nicely paced and accomplishes what we expect from this sort of film. The violence (of which there is a fair amount) seems organic rather than gratuitous and parts of the story are accompanied by a surge of genuine emotion.

Roger Ebert Full Review
Poor ...overlong expository dialogue, monotonous and all-too-brief action scenes, and a hero who can never be found when you need him—and replace Jason Bourne with Jackie Chan playing an unflattering Charles Bronson-type character and you have "The Foreigner."

Slant Magazine Full Review
Below Average Even overlooking its account of an inexplicable political resurgence, it falters in its needlessly convoluted plotting. By relegating its titular hero to a supporting role, the film neither gives Quan's tragic circumstances any defining shape nor does it effectively thread together its two storylines in any meaningful way.
