Notes:
Storyline Heading
Long before he sat on the United States Supreme Court or claimed victory in Brown v. Board of Education, Thurgood Marshall was a young rabble-rousing attorney for the NAACP.
.
Movie Type (Genre) Heading
Drama - This is not a traditional biopic on famed African-American attorney and later Supreme Court justice Thurgood Marshall, but a film centered on one of his cases, and an earlier and lesser known one at that. Also, he shares the lead spotlight with another lawyer involved in the case, and as such Josh Gad has just as much screen time and focus in this film as Marshall's portrayer, Chadwick Boseman. Fans of both will have much to enjoy here while other familiar faces such as Sterling K. Brown and Kate Hudson have smaller supporting roles. Language, sexual content, and mature subject matter such as rape and racism make the film not for young kids, but most parents may find this to be acceptable viewing for older pre-teens and up.

Critic's Review Heading

Berardinelli, Internet Critic Full Review
Good ... this movie – fiery, well-constructed, and compelling with all the twists and turns viewers like in a courtroom drama – lifts the man off the text book page and imbues him with a movie hero presence. It's engaging and inspirational but, in terms of what it reminds us of, it's also important.

Roger Ebert Full Review
Very Good There's an almost B-movie quality to certain parts—a touch of "Shaft”—and I mean that as praise. What I like most about Marshall the man and "Marshall” the film are their laid back confidence. I hope the filmmakers are already working on "Marshall Returns.”

Rolling Stone Full Review
Good Marshall, directed with spiky humor and propulsive drive by Reginald Hudlin... Marshall is a fiercely entertaining film, but not a great one. Charged by Boseman's dramatic lightning, Marshall gives us an electrifying glimpse of a great man in the making.

Slant Magazine Full Review
Average Is it out to win anyone's heart and mind? No, and the most depressing thing about the film is its vague insinuation that the moment for doing just that long ago passed.
