Storyline Heading
Based on the true life story of a young Marine corporal whose unique discipline and bond with her military combat dog saved many lives during their deployment in Iraq. When she is assigned to clean up the K9 unit after a disciplinary hearing, Leavey identifies with a particularly aggressive dog, Rex, and is given the chance to train him.

Movie Type (Genre) Heading
Drama War - This fact-based military drama is not so much about war than a soldier's relationship with her dog. That said, there are some violent situations as well as language that may be too intense for very young children; parents of older pre-teens may find this mostly safe. Kate Mara fans will definitely enjoy but fans of co-stars such as Common may be disappointed by their limited roles.

Critic's Review Heading

Roger Ebert Full Review
Very Good "Megan Leavey" is a powerfully emotional film that somehow—unbelievably, considering the subject matter—avoids sentimentality altogether. "Megan Leavey," so good in its most important aspects, is especially good in these sequences showing the training processes for these soldiers and dogs. This is an aspect of military culture we have not seen before.

Rolling Stone Full Review
Good Kate Mara is raw and riveting in the title role... ...this war drama deftly sidesteps the paths that suck you down in sentimental quicksand. Oh, you'll cry all right. But the movie earns your tears.

Rex Reed Full Review
Average What makes the movie such a dog is that by the time Leavey finds redemption, connection and a sense of purpose – those qualities that originally made her such a great newspaper story – she's long since sacrificed any connection to the audience. Oh, Lassie, go home!

Slant Magazine Full Review
Below Average Everyone here, from fellow marines to Iraqis, is merely a supporting player in Megan Leavey's emotional journey.
