Action Comedy - Although it shares the name of the late '70s-early'80s television series and is loosely inspired by it, this film could not be more different, for it is not an all-ages appropriate cop drama but an extremely raunchy comedy aimed at young adults, especially males. Fans of the lead stars Dax Shepard (who also wrote and directed) and Michael Pena should be pleased, but Kristen Bell only has a small role. Constant language and raunchy, crude humor, as well as some violence make the film not for kids.

Very Poor This isn't a knowing parody of a beloved show, a la the 2012 reboot/parody "21 Jump Street"; it's a sample of the brain-dead entertainment against which its creators are supposedly reacting. Painfully unfunny sex jokes...

The following is the original "What's Worth Watching" write-up for this movie.

Moviegoer Opinions:

Based on a theater exit polling of 45 moviegoers:
TEENS: This movie is targeted at young males but most weren't impressed. Only 1 of the 7 loved it with 2 more rating it "above average." Nearly 60% (5) males felt it was only an "average" movie, which isn't a very good review from this age group. The ladies gave a similar review. One loved it, but two rated it just "average."
TWENTYSOMETHINGS: Two males loved "Chips" but the remaining 3 rated it just "average." The lone female loved it.
ADULTS: Nearly 40% of the males loved it with another 15% indicating that they enjoyed it very much. Unfortunately, the remaining 45% weren't very impressed with most rating it "average," with some actually hating it. Like the males the female reviews are also very mixed. About 25% loved "Chips" with 30% rating it "above average." The remaining 45% rated it "average" to "poor."
