When Mae is hired to work for the world's largest and most powerful tech and social media company, she sees it as an opportunity of a lifetime. As she rises through the ranks, she is encouraged by the company's founder to engage in a groundbreaking experiment that pushes the boundaries of privacy, ethics and ultimately her personal freedom.
Drama Sci-Fi Thriller - This thriller is a big starring showcase for Emma Watson, and the
film is targeted at a much older adult audience than most of her
previous work. The other recognizable actors in the film such as Tom
Hanks, John Boyega, and the late Bill Paxton all have much smaller
supporting roles. Some language, very brief sex, and adult subject
matter make the
film not for Watson's kid following, who would not be interested anyhow.

NY PostFull Review Average ...a clumsy adaptation of Dave Eggers' 2013 dystopian novel about modern connectedness. Set at a Silicon Valley corporation roughly reminiscent of Google, the film is laughably blunt in message and oddly dated in set design.
Rolling StoneFull Review Poor It's a paranoid thriller without suspense, urgency or a single new thing to say. The Circle feels dull, dated and ripped from yesterday's headlines. It flatlines while you're watching it.
Rex ReedFull Review Good The biggest flaw is that the movie unravels at the end, asking more questions than it answers. The Circle is a female-driven story set in a male-dominated industry. ..appealing and slightly drafty drama puts pixie millennial Mae (Emma Watson) at its center.
Slant MagazineFull Review Below Average The film is a hokily melodramatic rise-fall-redemption story with a mostly unearned patina of greater significance. The Circle is almost as much of a bait-and-switch for its audience as The Circle is for Mae.

OPINION OVERVIEW The following is the original "What's Worth
Watching" write-up for this movie.
Based on a theater exit polling of 54 moviegoers:
The critic reviews vary greatly and so do these moviegoer reviews. Overall, these are mediocre reviews, at best.
TEENS:Twenty-percent of the males loved it with another 40% indicating that they enjoyed it very much. Unfortunately, the remaining 40% rated it low to very low. The female reviews are very similar. to the males. More than half enjoyed it very much or even loved it, but a large percentage didn't care for it at all.
TWENTYSOMETHINGS: The one male and one female rated it just "average."
ADULTS: These are not good reviews considering the star power in this movie. About 35% of the males rated it "above average," which indicates a movie they enjoyed very much but didn't love. Most of the remaining reviews are just "average" (enjoyable but nothing special or memorable). Just over 10% actually disliked it. The females enjoyed it slightly more with 10% loving it and close to 50% enjoying it very much. But, a large percentage felt it was just an "average" movie.
