Action Drama Sci-Fi - This is a science fiction action/adventure/mystery inspired by the
cult favorite Japanese comic book and animation series. Fans of
Scarlett Johansson should enjoy while fans of the original material
may be disappointed by both her casting and the completely different
main plotline. Language is at a minimum and the violence is not
bloody nor overly graphic, but some of the action sequences and
imagery may be too intense and disturbing for young kids.
PROFANITY: 1 S-words; a few others. SEX/NUDITY: Fleeting non-sexual nudity. VIOLENCE: Fights and shootings with minimal blood. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Some alcohol and tobacco. ACTION: Fights, chases, shootouts, explosions, destruction. COMEDY: None.
Roger EbertFull Review Average At times, "Ghost in the Shell” is beautiful, even stunning. But these visual pleasures can't mask the narrative emptiness. Never has there been a film so obsessed with the human soul that proves soulless itself.
USA TodayFull Review Below Average Despite the beautiful eye-popping world it creates, the sci-fi film Ghost in the Shell is a defective mess with lifeless characters, missed chances for thematic exploration and a minefield of political incorrectness.
NY PostFull Review Average Like its synthetic heroine (Scarlett Johansson), the live-action "Ghost in the Shell” is a feast for the eyes. With its killer-robot geishas, Godzilla-size hologram ads and nearly nude fighting gear, it's a cyberpunk wonderland — but there isn't much ghost left in this smokin' hot shell.
Slant MagazineFull Review Good ...a rare breed of tech-minded blockbuster that radically engages with the conditions of the zeitgeist, while also working as a pastiche of notable science-fiction films from the last 35 years... ...the primary pleasure of the film resides in its awareness of the impossibilities of unity, whether physical or cultural, within a rapidly transforming global milieu.
