Movie Type (Genre) Heading
Fantasy Musical Romantic - Much has been made about the presence of a gay character in Disney's live action remake of its classic 1991 musical animated feature, but it's only a fleeting visual reference at the very end, one that will very likely go over the heads of most children. That said, some parents may take issue with anything of the kind at all, but otherwise this is clean and safe viewing for the whole family though some scary moments with wolves may be too intense for the youngest of kids. Fans of Ewan McGregor, Emma Thompson, Ian McKellen, and the other name actors playing the enchanted objects may be disappointed that they're largely heard but not seen, with completely CGI figures taking their places for most of the movie, but Emma Watson fans will enjoy this big showcase.

Critic's Review Heading

Berardinelli, Internet Critic Full Review
Good Anyone who goes into the 2017 Beauty and the Beast with no knowledge of the earlier film will come away thinking it's top-notch entertainment. To be sure, this is a good movie - there's no denying that – but it suffers by comparison.

Roger Ebert Full Review
Good This gloriously old-fashioned musical with gee-whiz trappings is a dazzling beauty to behold (with enough Rococo gold decor to gild all of Trump's properties) and is anything but a beastly re-interpretation of a fairy tale as old as time.

NY Post Full Review
Good If you want your old favorite dressed in sumptuous new clothes, that's what you'll get. Those who always desired a little more depth from "Beauty and the Beast” will be happy, too: There's something there that wasn't there before.

Slant Magazine Full Review
Above Average And while a happy ending is never in doubt for its characters, the film somehow turns that inevitability into an asset. For a little while, at least, the majority of those in the audience can actually be reinforced in their belief that love will always trump hate.
